Whether you love to cook or you avoid your kitchen at all costs, it is one of the most fire-prone areas of your home. No matter whether you are making a three-course meal or are warming up a pot of mac and cheese, the heat and flame you use have the potential to cause widespread damage and even total devastation throughout your home.

Our SERVPRO of South Cabarrus County team doesn’t want you to suffer a home fire, so we explain some great ways to stay safe and fire-free in the kitchen below.

Smart Kitchen Tips

The most responsible thing to do while you are cooking with heat is to never leave your pot or pan unattended. Even just running down the hall to grab something quickly gives a wandering spark or flame the time it needs to take hold and spread.

Stay present and close by your stove, and consider keeping a lid nearby as well! In the event of a fire, you can quickly put a lid on your pot to snuff out the growing flames.

If you don’t already have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, you should add one right away. Since the majority of home fires start in the kitchen, it only makes sense to have a fire extinguisher that remains in that part of your home.

If the Fire Spreads

If the fire remains contained, you can try to extinguish it on your own by either putting a lid on it or using a fire extinguisher, but remember, you should never use water on a grease fire. Oil and water are never a good match and the water can actually make the fire much worse.

If a fire starts in your oven, don’t open the door! Calmly turn the gas or electricity off and let the fire burn down.

Little sparks or a burnt wooden spoon that got too close to a flame can typically be managed on your own, but if a fire ever starts to grow and gets out of control, call 911 immediately and leave your home as quickly as possible. Fires can consume entire rooms in minutes and can produce toxic smoke and gas, so the faster you can get out, the better off you will be.
